OK, Good Stuff: Avatar

You can watch our full review of Avatar here. Below are some points that we wanted to add onto our full review. Plus a fans take on our background.  Thanks @Eric_Erb.

One thing I forgot to mention during our review is regarding the music in Avatar.  A number of times during the movie, I thought, “This music makes this part of the movie feel a lot like ‘Titanic’”… and behold, for Avatar, James Cameron called upon James Horner, the award-winning composer who scored music for “Titanic”.  Unfortunately, in Avatar, the music is too similar to what we’ve already heard from Horner.  Don’t get me wrong, he is a fantastic composer, and the music in Avatar was very good, I just don’t think the songs composed were the right selections for this movie.  At times, the music felt cheesy and over the top.

Either way, the score – good or bad – shouldn’t really have any impact on anyone’s judgment of the movie.  There are so many other things going on in this movie that the score, no matter how good, takes a back seat to the visuals in Avatar.

patrickI would go even farther and say that the music was very disappointing, just based on the fact that other big movies like Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, Superman are all known by their music.  This is one part that this movie really missed out on.  It was so forgettable that I didn’t even notice the music at all.  It doesn’t take away for me, but one of the best parts of epic movies is massive scores that takes you away, and I never got that with this movie.  But I didn’t notice that I didn’t get this until now, so it isn’t a hugely important thing for me.

I would also like to say that I think the best way to view this film is on the movie screen in 3D.  I was just trying to say that some of the visuals effects (realness of the Na’vi) might look less than they would in 2D.  I know 2 people who saw the movie in 2D and thought that the visuals were perfect, something that I couldn’t 100% agree.  Although I think the 3D was amazing and definitely the best I have ever seen, I was a little disappointed from my expectations.  Cameron had stated that he was going to use 3D like lighting and in some ways this was true. All of the particle flying around and all of the bugs really helped the movie come to life.  But there was only one scene that I thought the 3D did more than just make the scene feel more real.  This was near the end when Colonel Miles Quaritch was getting the troops ready for battle and the 3D in the room with all the people made the scene feel more menacing, I wouldn’t have gotten the same feeling out of that part in 2D.  I guess I was expecting the 3D to effect me like that more, but it is a new technology for the mainstream and I am sure the more people that use it the better the techniques will become.  I guess in conclusion, if there are two more of these movies, just imagine what the third one is going to look like.

Here is a fan’s version of this weeks background.  He might make Robby in this fashion if he has time, I guess we will see.

  1. Alright! You win James Cameron. You are going to make a buttload of money on this movie. I concede!

  2. BTW, I saw Avatar again tonight…saw it at a 3-D IMAX and it was sold out at multiple theaters with IMAX. People are seeing this movie many many times. Just thought I’d point that out.
