OK, Good Stuff: Movies That Changed My Decade
So there has been a lot of pressure on me recently from Pat Lothian. Not a bad kind of pressure or anything. It just is. Well Pat. Let’s face it. You’re a consumer of pop culture. You love it. This I have learned about you. I enjoy this about you. Whenever I need to know something that is current, you sir, are my lifeline. Here’s a fact: Pat is reaching out to me. To get know me. That’s a really nice gesture, especially in a world when people don’t really care all that much. Whether Pat knows it or not, he is a lot like an episode of Seinfeld: “You are only as interesting as the books you read and the movies you see.” I’m sure I screwed that up. However, the sentiment remains. See, if Pat knows what your favorite movies are, he feels like he knows you. So, naturally, Pat wanted to know what my favorite movies of the decade are. Well. I had a really hard time. I don’t label things like that. So I sat down and tried to explain to Pat that I would rather not watch something, but instead rather create something. To no avail. He is not satisfied. So, here it is ten days into a new decade. I’ve looked into my life mirror Pat. Here’s what I can come up with for you. Some might say that this is a list of movies that changed my decade. Some might say that this is a list of movies that I remember seeing. I say, it is a bit of both.
Paris, je t’aime – This was the movie that I went to see with the woman who is now my wife. This was our first ‘date’
.
Gladiator –
So much man thigh.
Sideways –
Even more man thigh.
Moulin Rouge! –
First musical that I ever liked.
Rent –
First musical that I ever loved. (And then got really sick of people singing it everywhere I went, in turn it created disdain for the movie.
Casino Royale –
First Bond movie I have seen.
Grindhouse – What. The heck? Thanks for bringing back blaxploitation. If you hate this movie: DON’
T.
Crash – Ugh…
I mean, I guess it was good to call out racism. I think we forget it exists sometimes.
Brokeback Mountain –
Way to redefine love.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid –
Paul Newman. Robert Redford. I saw this at a movie theatre that replays old movies. It’s not from this decade, but the first time I saw it was in this decade. And, I loved it.
V for Vendetta – I fell asleep in the theatre. But, I woke up again. Then I whispered into someone’
s ear. And Matt Kula was there.
The Illusionist, also known as the movie that I thought was The Prestige, it was that other magic movie that wasn’t the Prestige. And I still haven’
t seen the Prestige.
Pan’s Labyrinth – I’
ll never look at a bottle the same way again.
Crouching Tiger hidden Dragon –
Dude. Roof running.
Grizzly Man –
This guy punches bears in the face!
The Life Aquatic –
Bill. Murray.
Kill Bill –
Making Mixed Media Work.
The Devil Wears Prada – Great Coat/Purse Montage. “That’s all.”
Wedding Crashers – Dude. Think of the first time you saw this movie. You’
ll agree.
Hotel Rwanda –
Cry.
Fahrenheit 911 –
Challenge the normal mode of thought.
Team America: World Police –
Then do it again.
Road Trip –
Remember when Tom Green was funny?
Borat – Here’
s a mirror America.
Scary Movie – Maybe it started a bad trend. But it definitely revived the ‘lampoon’
movie genre.
Star Trek –
My first time seeing Star Trek anything.
Saw – Remember that show with Marc Summers, “What would you do?”
Fitting quote.
The Happening – Oh yeah. It happened.
