Instant Movie Review: Extraordinary Measures

Welcome to the Instant Movie Review!  Watch as Pat, Robby, and sometimes special guests discuss the latest films right as they leave the theater.  Maybe Hip is the only place you’re gonna find that.

This week, the boys (along with special friend Beth) went and saw “Extraordinary Measures” starring Brendan Fraser and Harrison Ford. The film is based on the true story of John Crowley and his family – two kids suffering from Pompe Disease (a form of muscular dystrophy) – and a theoretical scientist who helps him find a cure for his children.

What did you think of this flick?  Tell us about it below!

Instant Movie Review: Avatar

Welcome to the Instant Movie Review – the place where we talk about movies before the popcorn kernels have even been picked out of our teeth yet.

For this first installment, Robby, Pat, and special guest Kevin (from Your News) talk about Avatar – Exciting!  This new James Cameron film has had big expectations, so I’m sure you’ll want to know if and how those expectations were met.  So, the film stars a number of talented people (too many to really talk about here), and takes place in the future on a planet called Pandora where there is a very valuable mineral deposit that the humans want to take for their own. In order to do that, they have to get the natives to trust them, hence…you bring in an Avatar – 50% human DNA, 50% Na’vi.

For the full review, check out OK, Good Stuff Episode 4.

Hip Shorts: The Walk

26 miles on foot… what started as an exciting day turned terribly, terribly wrong.

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

In this trailer for the real-life documentary, Pat, Lexi, and Rob begin the day in beautiful downtown Chicago to join the excited crowds, hopeful of the announcement that Chicago would be awarded the 2016 Olympic Games.  When that announcement never came, the gang started an impromptu long distance walk to march off their disappointment.  (Side note – bad idea to walk 26 miles in brown dress shoes.)  The walk seemed like a good idea at first, but as day turned to night, things got ugly.

For OR Against: Two Guys Who Know Way Too Much About Taylor Swift

The title says it all.

Monday, November 30th, 2009

In this preview of the show, “For OR Against”, Michael and T-Box get into a deep discussion about Taylor Swift, and ultimately decide if they are “for” or “against” Miss Swift.  It becomes clear halfway through that these two men might know a little too much about Taylor Swift, especially the one on the left.  They both also know Patsy Cline and her music.  we aren’t sure what to do about this situation.

My Indie Life: Our Favorite Indie Covers

Our Favorite Indie Covers – Heartless by Kanye, Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper, Hospital Beds by Cold War Kids, The Future Soon by Jonathan Coulton, Hey Ya! By OutKast… all of these songs made even better by five cool indie artists!

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

There are so many cool cover versions of songs out there, many that surpass the original version, and many that try a very different take on the song than the original artist’s.  We couldn’t necessarily limit ourselves to a definitive “Top 5”, but the five here are definitely really good, and some of our favorites right now.

Hip Shorts: Pat’s Quest for a Healthy Apple Pie

Pat tries for the fourth time to make a healthy apple pie.  Will he get it right this time?

Saturday, November 28th, 2009

Eating healthy and eating dessert don’t need to be opposites.  Pat and Rob try to make a healthy apple pie.  The only question is, will it taste good?

Recipe used: Note my measurements are what looks right.

  • Bear naked granola – kind of granola doesn’t matter, choose by what you want the crust to taste like.  (I suggest apple cinnamon)
  • Yogurt – again kind doesn’t matter (my favorite so far has been strawberry)
  • Cinnamon – add this if you have a granola that needs more flavor
  • Tapioca – keeps the pie together when cutting
  • Apples – Slightly Tart is best, but experimentation is good
  • Bake at 400 degrees for 60 minutes
  • Optional – cover edges with tin foil, take off with ten minutes left (this will stop the edges from burning)

Next time I want to try and cook the apples for 45 minutes alone first and then dump that into the crust for the last 15 minutes, I think this might help the crust keep its flavor better.  Please let us know any ideas or techniques that you use while baking apple pie.  I am sure there will be another try in the future.

Your News: Your News Weekday Update

Culture Clash – Decorations, Bread Shoes,  Justin Bieber and Whale Penis?

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Kevin is upset by the overlap of holiday decorations when he sees a Halloween house right next to a Christmas house. T-Box goes shopping for shoes and finds his dream shoes, the kind you can eat.  Robby is shocked by the influence of Justin Bieber on young girls.  Patrick somehow finds a way to bring up Whale Penises.  This is the best news out there? If you don’t think so then tell us what is.  What is the news you want to hear about?

Hip Shorts: Bartending School

Irish Car Bombs, Long Island Iced Tea, White Russians, and Lemon Drop Martinis

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

There are so many more drinks to choose from besides Rum and Cokes, Vodka and Sprites, and beer.  And while those drinks may seem mysterious, they’re actually still pretty easy to make.

So, we filmed this bad boy a little while ago…this being the very first Hip Short and all. We knew we wanted to do something with drinks, because they cost so damn much at the bars so having a fun night in, making our own drinks, sounded like a great plan.
