My Indie Life is for (Music) Lovers

For folks who love undiscovered music, folks who love knowing about great musicians that none of your friends know about yet, folks who are sick of Top 40 radio, (even folks who love Top 40 radio), and folks who just enjoy good music in general… this show is for you! “My Indie Life” introduces you to the best undiscovered musicians. On “My Indie Life”, we discuss new musicians every episode while showcasing their music for you guys to get a sense of what their music sounds like, so if you like what you hear, you can dive further into the world of that musician. The musical styles of the artists we feature will vary, but they will all have 2 things in common: they are very talented, and (to this point) they are not well known by the public.

We’ll be digging deep, and hope that the majority of artists we showcase will be unknown to everyone who watches, even those music snobs who pride themselves on knowing an artists before anyone else does. And if you do happen to be familiar with an artist we showcase, well you can give yourself a pat on the back and start recommending musicians we should showcase… Seriously, we want to hear from you guys. If you have a hidden gem of an artist that you love that nobody knows about, send us an email at myindielife@maybehip.com, and let us know! Maybe we’ll feature your favorite unknown musician!

Click in every week, starting December 3rd, to watch “My Indie Life”, and discuss musicians that you like on our blogs, forums, Twitter, email, and at www.thesixtyone.com/myindielife.

My Indie Life: A “lollapalooza” is a giant lollipop.

At Lollapalooza last weekend I made some observations. Allow me to share some of them with you.

People do not smell good together. There was a fantastic combo of body odor, urine, and weed hanging in the air for three days straight, and Grant Park no doubt will need a shitload of therapy for its PTSD. hang in there lil’ fella.

There were a lot of girls wearing jumpers. You know, those awesome shirts with shorts connected. They would be standing in line at the port-a-potties and I would be thinking to myself, “huh, how does that work?” I don’t really want to know.

There were a lot of girls with fanny packs. I saw at least 10 of them and my sister probably saw 5 more besides that. I love the fanny. In fact, my friends and I single-handedly brought the trend back…way back when we were young and chose convenience over style. (No hands, people, I don’t think you understand the glory of no hands) Now, the fanny is inevitably EVERYWHERE. Even american apparel is selling them. oh, and you best believe i bought one. it’s shiny.

My Indie Life: Lollapalooza 2009

This weekend I had the pleasure of attending Perry Farrell’s masterpiece that is LOLLAPALOOZA in Grant Park, Chicago. The weather was miserable (one day it rained and the other two it was hot as balls) but everyone continued to rock out with their junk out. My sister and I went to the festival all three days and saw 11 bands in total. Here is my initial ranking of all the bands I saw.

#1: Snoop Dogg. This was my first experience at a Snoop-a-loop concert, and I must say, even despite the heat, the show was amazing.  He has so much crowd involvement and literally everyone knows the words to his songs.  He really wants everyone to just get f***ed up, smoke weed and enjoy themselves.

#2: Vampire Weekend: Lots of energy on the stage and awesome basketball shorts. Ezra was wearing pants (I’m sure) with a flannel button-down, but I’m sure he changed last second because the heat was so god awful. This group made me wish I were a pothead if only for a brief moment in time.

My Indie Life: The most fun I have had listening to music

Thesixtyone.com is the most fun I have ever had listening to music. The website is a place that anyone can upload music to, but there is a twist. When you sign up, for free, you are given hearts and when you like a song you can heart it. If more people heart it after you then you get points, the more points you have the more heart you get to heart other songs. It is almost a game you get to play while listening to music. You also move up to higher levels and can unlock different parts of the site. On the side there are different challenges and quests. A challenge can be something like heart 50 songs and a quest is something like listen to seven songs on the recently posted page. Not only is the point system fun but it is very helpful when trying to find new music. Bands with more hearts usually have some pretty good songs. The site is also good at posting good songs on different pages like, “hot right now” and “top songs.” Overall the site is a great time and you can expect to find some more favorite songs to add to the list. You can become my friend and listen to my radio at http://www.thesixtyone.com/p3lothian.

What I am listening to now.
