OK, Good Stuff: Avatar Excitement

Update: We have now seen Avatar and are releasing the first part of our review here.

The first part is our review of the movie walking out of the theater.  The full review will be coming on episode 4 of OK, Good Stuff on Wednesday December 23rd.

What I thought about Avatar before seeing it.

I have been seeing a lot of Avatar footage lately and have been trying to figure out my level of excitement.  It seems like there is a lot to get pumped about, but from what I can tell of the story, I am not running out to see it be told. Partly because I already saw it done on South Park.  From the pieces of trailers that I have seen I have picked up that the humans want to mine for some sort of expensive element right under the home of very tall blue creatures (Na’vi).  They send one of their soldiers, in a body of one of these creatures they built in a lab, to learn their weaknesses.  When war finally breaks out he chooses to fight with the blue guys.

There doesn’t seem like that much story there, but at a two and a half hour run time, I guess there has to be more to it then that.  Anyway the story is only part of the For OR Against dilemma so I have made a Pro and Con list.  If you still have not seen the trailer you can see it at the end of the post.

Robby’s Quick Spiel on OK, Good Stuff

OK, Good Stuff

There are a lot of shows on TV and on the Internet that discuss pop culture… there are comedy shows that deliver punch-lined jokes about pop culture… there are technology websites that take a techie look at the latest gidgets, gadgets, and things on the Internet… there are celebrity gossip shows… there are movie reviews that take an analytical look into films, but there really hasn’t been a show that delivers insightful, yet normal, lighthearted discussion about hip things in the world around us between two normal guys who are simply passionate for these aspects of pop culture. We’re not professional celebrity reporters or computer geeks or news journalists, we’re just dudes who enjoy talking about the things in our world that interest us.

Click in every week, starting December 3rd, to watch “OK, Good Stuff”, and join in on the pop culture conversation on our blogs, forums, Twitter, or email at okgoodstuff@maybehip.com.

OK, Good Stuff?

Is it good stuff? Yes. This show has changed the most since inception, but we think we have the right pieces together now. I would like this show to be like you are hanging out with us, the more that you give the better. We want to talk about all of the things in pop culture that we find interesting. Sometimes we will give our review on a subject and sometimes we will just have a conversation about it. In the first couple of episodes we talk about announced movie sequels, internet comedies, Time’s worst inventions of the last 100 years, side wiki, and funny protest signs.

We really want to try and give you something that you don’t already know, whether that be about movies and TV shows coming out or something awesome on the internet. Let us know what you like and don’t like and we can find the sweet spot together. We hope that you enjoy the show, and if you don’t let us know and we will make it better.

OK, Good Stuff: Where the Wild Things Are

“Let the wild rumpus start!”

When I was a little girl, my mom used to read “Where the Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak almost every night before I went to sleep. It grew to be one of my most beloved childhood storybooks.

So, you can imagine my excitement when a movie was being made based on the book, and Spike Jonze was directing. I was excited, but also nervous because of that excitement. I have a habit of psyching myself up and then getting a big letdown when it’s not what I was expecting.

OK, Good Stuff: What happens when you are in love with Robert Downey Jr. – Part Two

The answer is: he tricks you into thinking he is your soul mate named “Damon Bradley” and you end up saying stuff like, “I was born to kiss you.” Ew.

The Movie: “Only You” with Marisa Tomei, Robert Downey Jr., Bonnie Hunt, and a small cameo by Billy Zane.

The Plot: Marisa Tomei as a young girl plays with a ouija board and finds out that her soulmate’s name is Damon Bradley. Around the same time, she goes to see a fortune teller who also tells her that her soulmate’s name is Damon Bradley. Flash forward years later, and Tomei is getting married to a man— not named Damon Bradley— and she gets a phone call that changes everything. GASP A man named (you guessed it) Damon Bradley calls to say that he can’t attend the wedding. So, on a whim she flies to where she believes this Damon Bradley IS currently so she can try and see if she has a shot of happiness with this complete and total stranger. (So already, you see that this woman is a wacko) She also has a super-butch haircut, by the by, and Bonnie Hunt plays her best friend. Off to a great start.

OK, Good Stuff: Zombieland

“Don’t be a hero…”

For anyone who has seen the movie “Zombieland,” good for you. For those who haven’t, I strongly recommend it immediately. I went into the movie theater expecting a great movie, since I had heard so many great things about it, and that scared me a bit because typically when I hear such raves about a movie I end up being let down. But let me tell you–I was NOT disappointed in any way shape or form. I have to say that I didn’t expect too much from the film from what I saw in the trailers, but nothing compared to the feeling I got from watching that movie in the theaters. This is definitely one of my favorite movies of 2009, and here are the reasons why.

OK, Good Stuff: What happens when you are in love with Robert Downey Jr.

The answer to the title is: you watch a movie where a man falls in love with his own daughter- well at least his soul does.

The movie I am referring to is Chances Are (1989) starring Robert Downey Jr., Cybill Shepherd, Mary Stuart Masterson and Shooter McGavin from Happy Gilmore.  WARNING: I am about to ruin this whole movie, but trust me- it begs to be ruined.

So the movie starts with Shooter and Cybill, and they are in love and get married.  Cybill waits to be joined by her husband at dinner for their anniversary, and then the worst happens.  While running across the street to the restaurant, Shooter is struck by a car, and even though in reality he would have easily walked away with a couple of bruised ribs and maybe a broken arm, he ends up dead.  The next thing he knows, he is in heaven/a large waiting room full of fog.  He runs around and screams about how he has to get home to his wife and baby (p.s. he just knocked up his wife).  Finally, he is taken to an area where people are reincarnated, and he is sent back down to become baby Robert Downey Jr.  The only problem is that the reincarnist forgets to give him a giant shot to ensure that he doesn’t remember his past life.  I know– pretty good stuff so far.

OK, Good Stuff: Julie & Julia

Tonight, on an impulse, my mother, sister, and I went to see “Julie & Julia” starring Meryl Streep and Amy Adams. I had no real desire to see it from the trailer (below), except that it stars Meryl Streep, whom I love in everything, save that musical train wreck known as “Mamma Mia.”

Now I’m going to assume for a second that you have not seen the movie or the trailer, so I’ll give you a quick overview. The movie is about a woman named Julie Powell, who decides to write a blog detailing her attempt to cook her way through 524 recipes in exactly one year (from Child’s “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.”)

OK, Good Stuff: Community

This is the show that I have been waiting for ever since I saw Joel McHale starring in some memorable Burger King Commercials.

Unfortunately his next move was onto the E! show The Soup. He has now been given a chance at redemption with the show, Community. This half hour comedy premieres September 17th 9:30/8:30c, along with returning shows Parks and Recreation and The Office.  (30 Rock is back in October).  It stars Joel McHale, Chevy Chase, Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Donald Glover, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, and John Oliver from The Daily Show.  The show centers around these characters attending the Greendale Community College.  This video gives a good preview of what the show is going to be.
