Welcome to my new blog!

It’s called, “Rad & Bad”, and I’ll be highlighting my favorite and least favorite things.  I’ll be talkin’ about anything related to pop culture including internet tv, movies, and music.

Here are some things I find neat that I would probably put on my Forever Rad list: theme parties (especially when Christmas sweaters are involved), Kylie the four-year-old PC, outdoor music festivals, the city of Chicago, & bacon.

Things I do NOT like include: Those talking pepperoni’s from the Tabasco commercial, books on tape (illiteracy is a real epidemic), cold weather, & Tom Cruise (except for when he’s dancin’ in “Tropic Thunder”).

Also, check me out on the shows I host, “My Indie Life” and “Chicago Rocks.”Auto Tune the News: This is an online phenom that I am absolutely obsessed with.  It is a series of songs/videos in which the Gregory Brothers (three brothers: Evan, Michael, & Anthony  +  Evan’s wife Sarah) create songs to popular news stories by auto tuning Katie Couric/Joe Biden/Sarah Palin’s voices.  It is hilarious, entertaining, and actually very catchy. This whole week, at one point or another, I have found myself with their songs in my head.  They even had a T-Pain guest appearance.  One of the things about this that I find amazing is that Katie Couric actually sounds like she could be a good singer, all thanks to the craze that has swept the nation, AUTO TUNE.

Interesting piece of trivia: Before Auto Tune the News’ success, Michael Gregory was an American Idol Reject! So adorable.

St. Patty’s Day and other great excuses to get wasted: This one doesn’t require much explanation.  I just love it when I can get absolutely smashed and don’t have to explain myself to anyone cuz there’s a great excuse for it…it’s like, “Hey, It’s St. Patty’s day, I’m half-Irish. Let’s get drunk!”  or “Guess what I am for Halloween? An alcoholic!” or my favorite, “It’s Friday!”

Any way you put it, the message is still clear.  Drinking is great – and when you have an excuse to drink, it feels even better. It feels RAD.  BTW, who’s comin’ out with me this Friday?

Johnny Tsunami: “Go Big or Go Home.” This was the Disney Channel before crap like Demi Lovato & Selena Gomez. This was way before “High School Musicals: 1, 2 & 3″. I love this for a few reasons. First, the acting’s actually not terrible. I LOVE Lee Thompson Young. I used to watch “The Famous Jett Jackson” on Disney & I always thought he was so hot. Second, the premise of this movie is so ridiculous but it’s also fun.  Johnny Kapahala is a surfer who has to move to Colorado; For some reason in this town, the public school kids snowboard & all the private school kids ski, which is just a ludicrous idea, but whatever. I’ll roll with it.  I think this might be my favorite of the Disney Channel Original Movies – followed closely by Brink starring Eric Von Detton.

“BedRock” by Young Money: Oh my goodness. The first time I heard this song, I was in the car by myself, and I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. I was kind of just going about my day, not really paying attention to the song on the radio, but then these words caught my ear, “Call me Mr. Flintstone, cuz I can make your BedRock.” That’s like the worst pick-up line I’ve ever heard.  And to top it off, they are saying it through song.  Just an overall pan of the song, and of Young Money in general. This is a big boo…

Heart Attacks on a plate: I’m speaking specifically about the onion “brick” from Hackney’s & the Bloomin’ onion.  And do you want to know why these are so bad:  because they are so freaking desirable.  I love onions, and so deep-frying them only makes them that much tastier. I used to waitress at Hackney’s and I remember we would all call the onion brick, “Heart Attack on a Plate,” but that didn’t really stop anyone’s mouth from watering when we carried them out.  Ugh…I hate that unhealthy foods exist, because that’s all I want to eat all the time.  But also, I don’t want to die at the age of 30.  So I just pine and lick my lips at the thought of these forbidden morsels.  I know I will be better in the long run for not eating this crap, but I will also be more grumpy.

This week a few of my topics are based on things that are going on/just happened. Winter Sports & Valentine’s Day. I am not a fan of the holiday Valentine’s Day, although I do celebrate Anna Howard Shaw Day which falls on February 14th (thanks Liz Lemon). And unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that the Vancouver Olympics are happening now.

The Movie Valentine’s Day: I got sucked in, people. I saw all the celebrities and eye candy that the film had to bring, and I just couldn’t resist seeing it on Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend. (Is that Cliche, or no?) Mind you, I saw the film after finding out that it got a 16% (that is very rotten – we’ve got decomposing fruit on our hands with this one) on Rotten Tomatoes…I was not swayed in my decision to want to see it.  I have to say that to me, it was totally worth the hype. There were some scenes that were like, gag me with a spoon, but for the most part I thought it was sweet and entertaining.  I shed a single tear at the end too at a very tender moment. You may call me a sap, but I don’t care – I find this movie Rad with a capital “R”. On my scale of rom-coms of this caliber, it’s not quite a “Love Actually” (which is near my top) nor is it down towards “He’s Just Not that Into You” which is not one of my favorites. (BTW, “HJNTIY” got a 43% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is considered Rotten, but just barely.  WTF.)

Eli’s Dirty Jokes: These are seriously funny – it’s a series with, I believe, 41 episodes each only a few minutes long.  Basically, this real accountant named Eli, who is 78-years-old give or take, tells jokes and someone animates them.  And these are not like Knock-Knock Jokes.  They are DIRTY.  RAD. They can be found online at GoPotato.tv or YouTube.  They can also be seen on Cinemax, Saturdays before the ten o’clock movie.

Winter Sports: I am a runner. And when I say I’m a runner, I don’t mean that I’m good at it – I just LOVE it.  Running outside during the summer months – there is nothing better if you ask me. The breeze in my hair, the smell of freshly cut grass lingering in the air. And there is also nothing worse than playing sports outside when it’s cold.

I’m a big fan of the summer Olympics; don’t even like watching the winter ones.  Although, I will say that Shaun White was pretty badass the way he won that second gold this past Wednesday.  Doesn’t change my opinion of the games though, in general.  Except for curling. I LOVE curling.

Taylor Swift (in Valentine’s Day): I have never been a fan of Taylor Swift.  Most recently in her career, she has appeared in the film, “Valentine’s Day” which is on my RAD list & features a slew of famous, talented people. Let me just admit it now – get it out in the open – I am jealous. I’d rather just embrace the fact that I dislike her for simply being famous, so it doesn’t come around to bite me in the ass.

But seriously, I have never seen acting this bad in any movie ever before.

“…cuz I didn’t have the time to be a big role in this movie, Garry was going to write in a small role for me…”  Just imagine if she’d had time for a big role.

Hello & welcome to my new blog. Here I will be picking the best and worst in pop culture whenever I see fit. I like writing about things I like – I also like writing about things I hate, so it seemed only appropriate to blog about it.

Here you can find all the music I’m listening to (good, bad, corny, melancholy, and everything in between), all the celebs I’m crushing on/boycotting, as well as movies, TV, internet TV that I’m into or over.

The song “Platypus” by the band Dress Rehearsal - I have been listening to this song on repeat for days straight.  When I started listening on myspace, it had 297 hits.  After a few days, it had 406 hits, and I’m pretty sure that’s all to do with me.  It is RAD.

“Teen Witch” – I hadn’t seen it in years, and my sister quotes it all the time so I bought it on Ebay, watched it, and now I’m hooked.  This is one of the most unintentionally funny movies ever.  It stars Robyn Lively, & Zelda Rubenstein (Rest In Peace) as witches. The costumes are amazing, the kid who plays her little brother should have gotten an Oscar for his performance, and oh, did I mention?  It’s a musical.  ”Top That!”

Mel Gibson – Watch the Youtube clip if you haven’t already.  I would say, “More power to ya” if it was ANYONE else but him.  It’s only been four years, Mel – that’s not that long ago.  Give people time to heal, time to forgive.  And hey…maybe don’t call people assholes when they’re trying to interview you. For shame, Mr. Gibson.  I will give you this – You’re entertaining as always.

Lady Gaga’s “Telephone” – Just so you know, Lady Gaga is a permanent fixture in my BAD list.  Her new single is no exception.  ”Sorry I cannot hear you, I’m kinda busy.  K-k-kinda busy.”  Not very busy, not too busy, but just…kinda busy. I can see nobody strained a muscle on that one.  It is catchy (as all Gaga originals are) but catchiness is no excuse. I kinda feel like she’s just f***ing with us all, and Beyonce for some reason agreed to this.
