Indie Music Weekly Picks: Loomis & the Lust, Dark Captain Light Captain

Check out the show, My Indie Life, every Tuesday at MaybeHip.com!

Loomis & the Lust is a rockin’ band from Santa Barbara, CA.  They have a cool 80s sound mixed with the modern rock of today.  It’s a perfect blend that just makes you get up and dance – which is what these people did during SXSW on the streets!

Today we’ve got two completely different but amazing groups. Loomis & the Lust is fun, upbeat, and poppy while the second group, Dark Captain Light Captain, is dark & brooding. There are some great, haunting harmonies from this London group. This is the perfect mood music for those times when you want to lock yourself in your room and listen to music all day.

Instant Movie Review: Hot Tub Time Machine

See what Rob & Pat thought of the movie “Hot Tub Time Machine” directed by Steve Pink, and starring John Cusack, Clark Duke, Craig Robinson, Rob Corddry and Chevy Chase.  The movie is about a time machine that happens to double as a hot tub.  A group of three friends, and the nephew of one, travel back in time to a trip that they took in the eighties. They try and figure out how to get home and how not to destroy the future.  Comment below and let us know what you thought of this film.

Internet TV Weekly Picks: Old Friends

This week, we’re highlighting a show that’s nominated for “Best New Web Series” at the 2010 Streamy Awards, called “Old Friends”. It’s about 2 guys, Tim and Nick, who knew each other in high school, they bump into each other, and they rekindle their friendship (well, sortof), even though they never really were friends to begin with.

Each episode gives a glimpse into their relationship and the relationship with their girlfriend and wife. The show really is funny, and most of the humor develops from the fact that Nick really wants to be friends with Tim, but Tim does not at all want to be associated with Nick.  You can see Pat and I discuss the show on episode 16 of OK, Good Stuff.

Indie Music Weekly Picks: The Little Heroes, Allison Weiss

Two more wonderful artists for you fine internet folks at home. If you haven’t seen Episode 17 of My Indie Life, what are you waiting for?

The first band they covered was The Little Heroes, who are blowin’ up with songs on hit shows like “The Hills”. They have a cool rockin’ sound that reminds me of a cross between Jimmy Eat World and the Fray, and their second album “Thank You” is out now!

Allison Weiss is unique, quirky, & reminds me a lot of strong female writers who have come before her: Rachael Yamagata, Leona Naess, Cat Power, Neko Case, Joni Mitchell, Ani Difranco…I could go on and on. She has the chops, guitar-talent, and upbeat fun attitude to really take her places.

Instant Movie Review: The Runaways

See what Rob & Pat thought of the movie “The Runaways” directed by Floria Sigismondi, and starring Kristen Stewart, Dakota Fanning and Michael Shannon.  The movie is based off of the book “The Runaways” written by lead singer Cherie Currie.  This is the story of Joan Jett and Cherie Currie’s experiences with the first all girls rock band The Runaways.  It spans the time from creation of the band to the ultimate demise of the group.  Comment below and let us know what you thought of this film.

Does It Go With Bacon? – Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches

Every once in a great while all of us ponder those important questions in life.  This blog covers one such question: Does it go with bacon?

One thing that bacon is good at is making sandwiches taste delicious.  The only problem is what about non meat sandwiches like PB & J’s.  This combination as weird as it is I find very intriguing.  I think that a nice crispy piece of bacon would go really well with a nice PB & J.  It bring me back to the days when I would shove a punch of chips in my sandwiches. Last Tuesday. Memories. What do you think? Find out what we thought of it below.

You can see even more bacon combinations here.

Internet TV Weekly Picks: Decisions Decisions

This week, we’re highlighting a show on Crackle.com, called “Decisions Decisions”. Each episode, two co-workers present each other with a “Would you rather?” question… for example, in the third episode, the question presented is: “Would you rather have to always be dressed as the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz OR live your life in front of a live studio audience.

Some of the choices are quite absurd, but the fun comes when the characters imagine what their lives would be like if they chose either of the options presented.  Even though the show doesn’t evolve throughout the series (it’s literally the same format each episode), many of the episodes are quite funny. You can see Pat and I discuss the show on episode 15 of OK, Good Stuff.

Indie Music Weekly Picks: Freelance Whales, The Uglysuit

This week we are featuring two bands that are playing at SXSW March 17-21st in Austin, Texas. The first is Freelance Whales, who have been gaining all kinds of momentum lately in the indie music scene. They have a wonderful balance of synth & folk sounds & I have found myself listening to their myspace widget on repeat for hours on end. Check them out on Episode 16 of My Indie Life.

The Uglysuit is funky folk-rock group from Oklahoma City, in which the members have been playing together since their teens. The group is influenced by “happiness bursting out of an apple pie” and it seems that more than anything they want to promote love through their music. They show a passion for what they are doing that is hard to come by, & I am so excited to hear more from them.  My favorite song is called “Chicago.” And there’s no surprise as to why.
